Garage dimensions

Garage footprints in common use run from about 12 x 20 for a single car to 40 x 40 for four, and the width you choose decides how much room is left around the vehicles.

How to read the table

Width decides the garage, depth decides the storage

Every footprint above parks the stated number of vehicles. What separates them is what is left over. Width is spent on door swing and the aisle between vehicles; depth is spent on whatever lives in front of the bumper. Depth is usually the cheaper of the two to add, because it does not lengthen the door wall.

Common questions

For two cars, 24 x 24 is the footprint most often built. It is a common choice rather than a standard: 20 x 20 and 30 x 30 are both ordered regularly for the same two vehicles, and the difference between them is clearance, not capacity.

Depth normally. Adding depth lengthens the side walls; adding width lengthens the door wall and, on a clear-span building, increases the span. That is why 24 x 30 is a more common upgrade than 30 x 24.

That depends on your vehicle and how you use the space. Every table on these pages shows the leftover width and depth so you can judge it against the envelope you actually park.
