2 car garage dimensions

Two-car garages are commonly planned between 20 x 20 and 30 x 30; width decides whether both doors open comfortably, and depth decides whether anything can live in front of the vehicles.

Three gaps exist in a two-car bay: wall, centre, wall. The table divides the leftover width evenly between them.

Door layout

One 16 ft opening or two 9 ft openings

A single 16 ft opening gives you one wide target and no centre column between the vehicles, which suits drivers who reverse in. Two 9 ft openings give you 18 ft of opening in total but split it, so each vehicle has its own aim point and the wall between them takes the wear. On a 24 ft wide building, two 9 ft doors leave about 6 ft of wall spread across three pieces — check that against your door manufacturer's published sideroom before committing.

Use of space

Where storage actually fits in a two-car bay

Wall storage takes width you have already spent on door swing, so shelving usually goes on the back wall instead. At 24 ft of depth a pickup leaves about 5 ft behind it; at 30 ft it leaves about 11 ft, which is a workbench plus a walkway plus the shelving. That is the whole argument for 24 x 30 over 24 x 24.

What each step up is really buying

Two-car footprints against real requirements

  • Two compact cars, no storage

20 x 20 leaves about 2′ 8″ per gap using the car envelope.

    Fits
  • Two mid-size vehicles, daily use

    24 x 24 is the most-built two-car footprint for this reason.

    Fits
  • Two full-size pickups

    24′ of width leaves 3′ 4″ per gap. 30′ leaves 5′ 4″.

    Marginal
  • Two vehicles plus a permanent workshop

    30 x 30 leaves about 11′ behind the vehicles and 5′ 4″ per gap.

Common questions

Two-car garages are commonly built between 20 x 20 and 30 x 30. A 24 x 24 gives 576 sq ft and leaves roughly 3 ft 8 in between and beside two 6 ft 6 in vehicles.

One 16 ft opening removes the centre wall and gives a single wide target. Two 9 ft openings give each vehicle its own aim point and keep more wall between them. On a 24 ft wall, two 9 ft doors leave about 4 ft of wall in total once a half-foot jamb allowance is added each side.

For two compact cars, yes: it leaves about 2 ft 8 in per gap. For two full-size vehicles it is tight enough that door swing becomes the daily problem.

At 24 ft of depth a 19 ft pickup leaves about 5 ft behind it. At 30 ft it leaves about 11 ft — enough for a bench, a walkway and shelving.
