RV garage dimensions

Size the building from your own RV's published height and length, not from a class average: the door has to clear roof-mounted equipment, and the depth has to clear the hitch.

Lengths, heights and widths are published Winnebago specifications. The allowances are stated inputs, listed below.

Air conditioners, satellite domes and solar mounts sit above the published roof line. Measure your own before ordering a door.

There is no universal RV dimension

A Class B van is 9 ft 4 in tall and a Class A coach can be 12 ft 6 in. Sizing from a class average produces a door that clears one and not the other. Use the specification for the exact model you own.

Planning

Length margin is where plans fail

Published length is the coach, not the coach plus a tow hitch, a bike rack or a person walking round the back to close the door. A 36 ft 11 in Adventurer 36Z in a 40 ft deep building leaves 3′ 1″ in total — less than a walkway once the door track is in. At 45 ft of depth the same coach leaves 8′ 1″.

Platform calculation

Every margin above is the building dimension minus the published RV dimension. Substitute your own model's figures and the arithmetic is the same.

What fits around the RV

Common RV garage requirements against the published figures

  • Walk both sides with the slide-outs in

A 2 ft side margin each side clears an 8 ft 5.5 in coach in a 12 ft 6 in wide bay.

    Fits
  • Operate slide-outs inside the building

Slide-out projection is model-specific and is not published as a single figure. Measure yours.

    Marginal
  • Store a car alongside a Class C

A 30 ft wide bay parks an 8 ft 5.5 in coach and a 6 ft 6 in car with room between them.

    Fits
  • Clear a 12 ft 6 in coach under a 12 ft door

Negative margin before roof equipment is even counted.

Answers

Common questions

Take the published height of your RV and add an allowance for roof equipment. A Class C at 11 ft with a 1 ft allowance wants a 12 ft opening; a 12 ft 6 in Class A wants 13 ft 6 in. There is no single answer that covers both.

Published length plus a walk-around margin. A 36 ft 11 in coach in a 40 ft building leaves about 3 ft 1 in in total, which is not enough to walk behind it comfortably.

Published RV width for the coaches listed here is 8 ft 5.5 in. With a 2 ft side margin each side that is a 12 ft 6 in bay before any storage along the walls.

No. They are published Winnebago specifications for named floorplans. The allowances added to them are stated planning inputs, shown separately so you can substitute your own.
