Carport vs garage

The real question is not carport or garage. It is how much enclosure the way you use the space actually needs — and whether you want to be able to close it in later.

A steel carport is a roof on columns: cover from sun, rain and snow, with the sides open or partly closed. A steel garage is the same structure enclosed on all four sides, with doors, so the space inside becomes a room you control.

Between those two sit partly enclosed buildings — one, two or three sides closed — which is where a surprising number of projects actually land once the buyer thinks about wind direction, access and what they are really storing.

Which one fits your project

A carport may fit better if

  • Cover from sun, rain and snow is the actual requirement.
  • You value driving in from more than one direction.
  • The thing you are covering is tall or awkward to thread through a door.
  • You want the option to enclose later rather than committing now.

A garage may fit better if

  • Anything stays inside that you would not leave outdoors.
  • You will work in the space in poor weather.
  • You want the interior closed, lockable and out of view.
  • You may insulate or line the interior at some point.

Ask your supplier

  • What is the clear height at the door and where the vehicle parks?
  • If I close one or two sides now, what changes structurally?
  • Can this be enclosed later, and what should be specified now to keep that easy?
  • What ventilation and condensation control do you recommend for an enclosed building here?
  • Is the concrete, anchorage and site prep inside or outside this quote?

The two options at a glance

Option A

Carport (open cover)

Overhead protection with open or partly closed sides.

  • Vehicles, RVs or equipment that mainly need shade and cover from rain and snow.
  • You want to drive in and out from more than one direction.
  • You are covering something tall where an overhead door would be the awkward part.
  • The site is exposed and you would rather not enclose in stages.

Option B

Garage (fully enclosed)

A closed, lockable building you can work in and store in.

  • You store tools, materials or anything you would rather keep out of sight and out of weather.
  • You want to work in there in cold, wet or windy conditions.
  • The space will double as a workshop, hobby space or general storage.
  • You may insulate, line or condition the interior later.

Start from how you will use it

Enclosure decisions get easier when you describe the day-to-day use rather than the building. Four patterns cover most projects.

The pattern you recognise usually tells you the enclosure level, and the enclosure level tells you the building.

  • Parking and cover only

    Vehicles come and go daily and nothing is left loose. Open cover generally does the job, and access from several sides is a real advantage.

  • Cover plus a bit of storage

    There is a mower, some tools, a few things you would rather not have visible. This is where partial enclosure — closing the windward side and one end — earns its place.

  • Vehicle plus workspace

    You intend to do things in there. Enclosure stops being about the vehicle and starts being about you working comfortably.

  • Long-term or seasonal storage

    Something sits for months: a classic car, a boat, a seasonal RV. Full enclosure with ventilation planned deliberately is normally the direction.

Enclosure is a spectrum, not a switch

Almost every steel cover can be specified open, partly enclosed or fully enclosed, and the sides you choose to close are worth thinking about rather than defaulting. Closing the side that faces prevailing weather changes what the cover actually achieves far more than closing a sheltered side.

Enclosing part of a structure also changes it structurally: a closed wall picks up wind differently from an open bay, so enclosure is a design input that goes into the engineering, not a panel you tack on afterwards.

That is also why a later enclosure is worth flagging now. If you know you may close it in, the building can be specified with that in mind from the start.

Access, clearance and the thing you actually park

Open covers are forgiving on access: you can approach from an open side, park at an angle, and manoeuvre without threading a door opening. Enclosed buildings are precise: you enter through a door of a fixed width and height, and that door sets the largest thing that will ever come inside.

The clearance that matters is the height at the door and the height under the framing where the vehicle sits, not the ridge height quoted for the building. Tall vehicles — RVs, lifted trucks, a trailer with a rack — are where this goes wrong most often.

Measure the tallest and widest thing you intend to put inside, add manoeuvring room, and bring those numbers to the quote. Our dimension references exist for exactly that step.

  • Door width and height

    For a garage, this is the real constraint, not the building width.

  • Clear height at the vehicle

    Under the framing where it parks, not at the peak.

  • Turning room

    Space to approach and swing in, especially with a trailer.

Weather, condensation and ventilation

An open carport ventilates itself. An enclosed steel building does not, and that is the part buyers under-plan. Once you close a building in, moisture, temperature swings and the surfaces inside interact, and ventilation and condensation control become part of the specification rather than an afterthought.

If the plan is to store something moisture-sensitive, or to enclose and later insulate, treat ventilation and condensation control as decisions to make with your supplier at design stage.

None of that argues against enclosure. It argues for enclosing deliberately.

Leaving yourself the option

The most common regret in this decision is not choosing wrong — it is not saying out loud that the use might change. Buildings outlive plans.

If you think you may enclose one or more sides, add a door, or eventually insulate, say so when you request quotes. Some of those changes are simple if anticipated and awkward if not, and it costs nothing to raise them while the building is still on paper.

Enclosure level is a structural input. Confirm any later enclosure plan with your supplier before the building is engineered.

Enclosure is the single largest variable between these two options, but it is not the only one, and the others often matter more than buyers expect.

Hold these steady across quotes and the comparison becomes real.

  • Enclosure level

    Each side you close adds panel, framing detail and trim.

  • Doors

    Overhead doors are a component and an opening in the structure at the same time.

  • Height

    Extra clear height for a tall vehicle affects framing and cladding together.

  • Insulation and lining

    Only relevant once enclosed, and always a separate scope.

  • Site work

    Slab, anchorage, grading and access are frequently outside the building quote.

What the engineered design decides

Column spacing, anchorage, foundation requirements and the wind and snow loads your structure must resist are set by the engineered design for your site and by the authority having jurisdiction. Enclosure level is a structural input, not a cosmetic one. This page states no load ratings, no permit thresholds and no security or insurance conclusions.

Questions buyers ask

Often yes, and it is much simpler when the possibility was raised before the building was engineered — enclosure changes how the structure handles wind. Tell your supplier at design stage if a later enclosure is even a maybe.

Requirements vary by jurisdiction and by structure, and there is no national threshold we can quote you. Ask your local building department about your specific structure and site before ordering.

An enclosed building removes wind and direct weather, which changes how the space feels, but it is not a heated or insulated space unless it is specified that way. Insulation, lining and any heating are separate scope items.

An open cover involves less material and fewer components than the same footprint fully enclosed, but the gap depends on size, height, doors and your local market — so we point pricing questions to our cost research rather than publishing a figure here.
