Trim is the least glamorous line on a steel building quote and one of the most consequential. Panels shed water across a surface; trim is what closes every edge, corner and junction where that surface stops. This page covers the whole package in one place, because that is how it is bought.
A steel building is a set of flat planes that meet at edges. Panels handle the planes. Everything at the ridge, the eave, the rake, the base, the corners and around every opening is trim and flashing, and it is where water, wind-driven rain, pests and daylight get in when it is wrong.
We have deliberately kept this as one page rather than a scatter of near-identical entries for each piece. A buyer does not order a rake trim; they order a trim package, and they need to be able to see the whole thing at once.

Every trim location on one building
Two quotes for the same building can differ meaningfully on trim without either being wrong. One may include a full package with closures and sealant; another may list trim as a lump sum, or exclude the trim around openings, or assume a lighter gauge. The buildings look identical on paper and are not identical in the rain.
Trim also drives appearance more than most buyers expect. Corner and rake trim in a contrasting colour is the single cheapest way to change how a building reads from the road, and it is usually specified at order stage along with the panel colour.
The ridge cap closes the gap where two roof slopes meet at the top. On many buildings the ridge is also where ventilation happens, in which case the cap is a vented assembly rather than a plain closure — that is a ventilation decision as much as a trim one.
Eave trim closes the low edge of the roof and directs water off it, or into a gutter where one is fitted. Rake trim runs up the sloping edge at the gable ends, closing the joint between roof and end wall and doing a large share of the visual work on the building's silhouette.
Use this as a checklist against the quote. If a row is not covered by a line item, ask where it lives.

Piece names vary slightly between manufacturers. Match by function against your erection drawings rather than by name alone.
Base trim closes the bottom of the wall panels where they meet the slab, and it is the line that pests, wind-driven rain and splash-back all test first. Corner trim closes the vertical junction where two wall planes meet.
Around every door, window and louver there is a further set of trim: jamb and head trim that closes the panel edge into the framed opening. This is the piece most often missing from a comparison, because openings are frequently quoted as a separate scope.
A ribbed panel does not meet a flat trim piece cleanly — the ribs leave gaps. Closures are the shaped foam or metal pieces that fill that profile at the eave, ridge and base. Sealant tape and caulk close the remaining joints between laps and under trim.
These are low-value items with high consequences. A trim package quoted without closures is not a complete package, and the omission is easy to miss because the line reads as if it is.
Trim should match the panels in coating system and colour batch, not just in colour name. Where panel and trim carry a finish warranty, that warranty is issued by the coating or panel manufacturer and applies to the products it names — so mixed sourcing can quietly leave part of the envelope outside the document you thought covered it.
Ask for the trim to be listed with the same coating description as the panels, and ask which single document covers both.

In steel building practice the two words are used for the same family of parts: formed sheet metal that closes a junction between planes. Some suppliers reserve flashing for pieces whose primary job is water management and trim for pieces whose job is also appearance, but there is no firm line, and your erection drawings will use whichever convention the manufacturer prefers.
Where a ribbed panel meets a flat trim piece, the ribs leave open gaps. Closures fill that profile. Leaving them out leaves openings at the ridge, eave and base of the building, which is where wind-driven rain, dust, birds and rodents get in. They are inexpensive and routinely omitted from quotes, which is why they have their own row on our checklist.
Yes, and it is one of the cheapest ways to change how the building looks. Contrast rake, corner and base trim is common. Two practical points: confirm the contrast colours are priced rather than assumed, and confirm the trim carries the same coating system as the panels so the whole envelope sits under one finish warranty.
Usually most of it does, but the boundaries vary — trim around openings in particular often travels with the door scope rather than the building scope. Rather than assuming, run the piece-by-piece table against each quote and ask which line item covers each row.

We do not publish generic detailing figures because they differ by manufacturer and profile, and following the wrong ones is exactly how an envelope leaks.
