A daylight panel is manufactured to the same profile as the metal panel it replaces, so it laps into the adjacent sheets and follows the same fastening arrangement. From inside it reads as a lit strip in the roof or wall; from outside it is a matt section in the panel run.
Because they sit in the panel run rather than as a separate unit, they are specified with the building and installed with the panels. That is why they cost so little to include at order stage and so much more to add afterwards.
Roof panels give the most light for the fewest panels and distribute it evenly across the floor, which is why they are the default for warehouses and workshops. They are usually spaced through the roof rather than clustered, so the light is even rather than concentrated in a bright patch.
Wall panels give light at working height and along a specific elevation. They are useful where the roof is not available, where a mezzanine blocks roof light, or where the building's use makes glare from above a problem. A row of translucent panels high in a sidewall is a common compromise.
Where daylight panels go, and what they cost you
This is the trade nobody mentions. A translucent panel is not an insulated panel: where one sits, the insulated roof or wall assembly is interrupted, so it is a cooler surface in winter and a warmer one in summer than the metal around it.
That has two consequences. In an insulated, heated building, a run of daylight panels is a run of thermal weak points, which is a real consideration in a cold climate. And a cooler interior surface is exactly where condensation forms first, so if the building has any moisture load, the daylight panels are the surfaces most likely to drip. Neither is a reason to avoid them — it is a reason to decide the number and placement alongside the insulation and condensation strategy rather than separately.
A translucent roof panel looks like part of the roof from above and is not a walking surface. This matters whenever anyone goes onto the roof — for maintenance, for a solar installation, to clean gutters, to inspect after a storm.
